March 23, 2015 - March 27, 2015 Agenda for World Theatre Class

Monday, March 23rd:

Emotional Cocktail Party
One person is on stage preparing for a party. The host decides on an emotion and plays that emotion as s/he is preparing for the party. The first party guest arrives with her/his own emotion which should not be the same emotion as the host. The host then changes her/his emotion as the guest's. As each new guest arrives with a new emotion, the host and the other party guests who are already at the party, change their emotions to fit the new guest's emotions. Then, the party guests exit in the same order they arrived and as they leave, they "take" their emotions with them; eventually, the host is alone on stage with her/his original emotion.

Wednesday, March 18th Agenda

Wednesday, March 18th:

4th Period:

See the final three scenes:
"A Fine Line Between Love and Hate"
"When We Grow Up'
"Who Cares?"

Hollywood Murder Mystery:
Create a short play that tells a story in 7 scenes.
Each scene must have a clear beginning, a middle and an end. You can separate the scene by using a "Blackout/Lights Up" or you can use other transitions, like a narrator, or a written sign, or singing, for example.

Each actor may play either multiple roles or play one character that appears throughout the play.

Each actor MUST appear in every scene, even if s/he does not say anything. For example, sometimes an actor can play an animal, furniture, a potted plant or any other scenic element.

Your scene must include:
Settings, scenery, location or modes of transportation created by the actors' bodies (cars, horses, camels, elephants, boats, etc.)
Sound effects created by the actors' voices
Music or singing
Dancing or some kind of choreography
A death
A romantic relationship
A surprise
A character who gets what s/he wants
A character who doesn't get what s/he wants
A wedding or a funeral
At least one animal played by an actor
A murderer
A victim
A detective
A chase
A conflict
A climax
A resolution

1. Shawn, Kyla, Jess, Precious, George,
Shawn and Jess set George up for the murder of his wife, Jess. George gets sent to prison and Shawn and Jess run off to be married. Her friends, Kyla and Precious, are left to mourn their friend whom they think is dead.

2. Millenia, Cheyenne, Esteban, Sabrina, Michelle, Ashley, Amy, Doug
Ashley is the corpse at a funeral. Her friends are there for her funeral but seem pretty indifferent to her death. After everyone leaves, Ashley wakes up and finds out she is a zombie. However, things don't seem to go her way in zombie land for Doug and Esteban, who are zombie guys,  are not interested in her.

Period 5:
Carnival!
Statues:
Four actors are on stage. One of the actors becomes the sculptor and begins to sculpt the actors into poses like sculptures. Once the “sculptor” is finished, the actors then begin an improv based on their poses.

Class breaks into their scenes. Each scene has a student director who helps block the scenes.

At end of class, the students show their work.

6th Period:
Warm-ups:
Cat and Mouse
Students pair up
Students decide which is the cat and which is the mouse.
The cat chases the mouse. If the cat eats the mouse then the cat becomes the mouse. The mouse can avoid the cat if s/he links up with another pair. The person furthest away from the mouse becomes a dog and chases the cat.

Statues:
Four actors are on stage. One of the actors becomes the sculptor and begins to sculpt the actors into poses like sculptures. Once the “sculptor” is finished, the actors then begin an improv based on their poses.

No one’s scene partner is here.

Class is divided into two groups
Each group creates an improv composition:
The improv composition must contain:
The way things look in this world
The way things sound in this world
The way people are in this world.
There must be a:
30 seconds of simultaneous action
Revelation of an object (for example: a box is opened and a knife is revealed.)
A scenery
A mode of transportation
An animal
Sound effects from any source
Music
A funeral or a wedding
A surprise
One word or phrase which must be repeated as many times as possible.

First Group: Amber, Tigran, Katia, Chynna, Roger
The Way the World Should be: Two couples are on stage; soft music playing.
The Way the World Is: Chynna and Roger are fighting
The Way the World Is: Tigran proposes to Katia who accepts.

Second Group: Jeriah, Aaron, Erick, Jayna, Katia, Karla

Warm-ups

"Bombs and Shields”

Pick one person in group who is your bomb but do not tell that person s/he is your bomb; now, choose someone who is your shield, but do not tell that person s/he is your shield. When the director yells, “Bomb!” if the shield is
not between you and your bomb, then you are dead!

Carnival!

Actors stand in a circle. Someone steps into circle to introduce a sound and a movement; everyone imitates; another person enters from the circle to take over and introduce another sound and movement.

Cat and Mouse
Students pair up
Students decide which is the cat and which is the mouse.
The cat chases the mouse. If the cat eats (catches) the mouse then the cat becomes the mouse. The mouse can avoid the cat if s/he links up with another pair. The person furthest away from the mouse becomes a dog and chases the cat.

Statues:
Four actors are on stage. One of the actors is the sculptor who "sculpts" the actors into poses like sculptures of people. Once the "sculptor" is finished the actors then begin a scene  based on their poses as sculptures.

Symphony of Emotions:
Actors are given emotions to express through  sound and movement. The actors are then assigned different emotions and the director "directs" them in a symphony of emotional sounds.
The actors then say their lines from their  scene  using the emotion assigned. The actors all stand onstage and say their lines simultaneously.

Statues: actors strike different pose each time director strikes drum, creating different emotionally expressive poses..

Statues
music playing
Students walking  about
Director says:
Statue - actors stop and strike a pose
Statue - different pose
Statue - different pose
Director says walk and the actors start walking
Statue - diffferent pose
Statue - different pose

Addition/Subtraction: students in circle; 1st actor starts with a number; 2nd says plus or minus; 3rd says another number; 4th says equals the number; next go around kids change the numbers to silly objects

Props: kids take an object and turns it into whatever it is not and creates an issue with it, drawing everyone into the drama; for example, a sweater turns into a radio which will not work. Everyone tries to make it work. Then  the sweater is thrown to another student, where it will become something else.

Friday, March 13th:

Anyway, I set up an Imaginative Obstacle Course on stage. This is an exercise I used once as my audition for two productions of Peter Pan that I directed with younger teens in Washington (see plan for details). The kids really seemed to enjoy it, but it took nearly the whole period to get everyone of them through it, mostly because of all of the regular nonsense from all of the regular people. Positive standouts from this exercise were: Esteban, Shawn, Carter, Jessalie, Travione, & George.

Obstacle Course:
Run across - stop midway - Stream stone hop - Target shoot (did you hit it?) - Broad jump across the moat - Raise the flag - Slo Mo finish line

Moving on, here are the groups I've made. There are three larger home groups for games (these could also be used for the multi-scene mini productions you were talking about, or they could be broken down further for that).

I've also made smaller improv-composition scene groups, which I had hoped to use on Friday, but was not able to get to due to lack of time. Check these out and let me know what you think.

Home Groups:

Red Group  Purple Group  Blue Group

Improv Groups:
  1. Amy G Ashley Michelle Daylan
  2. Doug George Cheyenne Danya Esteban
  3. Precious Travione Guadalupe Jalen
  4. Ray Anthony Jack Kenneth
  5. Sabrina Juan Tamara Joanna Henry
  6. Shawn Jenae Kyla Jessalie
  7. Carter Annie Ty Sarena Jasmine
  8. Tamani Milenia Amy M. Yanira
