Tuesday, January 20^th:

1^st Period:

Relative pronouns: that, which, who, whoever, whomever, whom

The relative pronoun connects the subject or noun with the adjective clause which describes the noun or subject.

The relative pronoun almost always immediately follows the noun or subject.

Writer’s Choice, pages 542 – 544; exercises 9 and 10

Exercise 9: write the adjective clause and the noun it modifies:

Example:

Ceremonial dances – they have been performing in the same way for centuries.
If there is a relative pronoun, underline the relative pronoun.

Exercise 10: write the adjective clause and the noun it modifies; then identify it as essential or nonessential.

Example:

Zoo – that we visited last week. Essential

Zoo – which has several species of rhino on display. Nonessential.

Patch Work Quilt: Go through the book, find incidents in the lives of the following characters and write them down on a sheet of paper and draw a box around them.

Pecola

Polly

Cholly

Claudia

Kids clearly not paying attention, not understanding the book.

2^nd Period:

Alex went over the vocabulary quiz which he will give on Friday.

Briefly went over the grammar homework; pages 542 – 544; exercises 9 and 10

Due tomorrow, Wednesday

Read The Great Gatsby; pages 128 – 130

Briefly went over The Great Gatsby’s character chart and time line and how to do it.

Kids squirrelly today: Hilda sitting with Rebecca, resistant to moving; Macie talking with Chuy, not listening, both resistant to moving; Chantal, Maryrose, Ivette did not have books, sitting together. Davion didn’t have book, slouched between two girls, not paying attention, resistant to moving. Tyler pushing broken stapler with her foot  in front of class, apparently for attention.  I asked her several times to pick it up and throw it away. She pushed the broken stapler with foot until it reached the waste basket, then and only then did she pick it up.

Tomorrow, give them assigned seating.

4^th Period:

Theatre Games:

“Living Statue”

Kids squirrelly today. Talkative, not listening at all.

5^th Period:

Prep for auditions for Twelfth Night

“I am, I feel, I want!”

Students stand in a circle. Someone steps into the circle and says, “I am_______”, accompanied with a gesture, which everyone mimics while saying the last word of the phrase, “I am ­­­­­­ ________!” The student then says, “I feel_______!” accompanied by a gesture, which everyone mimics while saying the last word of the phrase, “I feel________!” The student then says, “I want________!” accompanied by a gesture, which everyone mimics while saying the last word of the phrase, “I want_________!”

Second part of this exercise:

The actor walks onto the stage and says, “I am_______! I feel_________! I want_________! “ The audience writes down two adjectives describing you and two adverbs describing how you walked on to the stage, how you spoke or how you acted: for example, “She walked on to the stage quickly.”

The audience then shares their impression of you.

Redo: For those who are not satisfied with the audience’s impression of them, they may incorporate the adjustments and redo their “I am, I want, I need.”

6^th Period:

Dramatis Personae Chart:

Viola/Cesario = same person, a girl posing as a boy, in love with Orsino, the Duke of Illyria, twin to Sebastion,

Orsino = duke of Illyria, is in love with a woman by the name of Olivia, who cannot stand him!!!!!

Sea Captain: The  captain of the ship that foundered at sea. Everyone was drowned as far as we know, including Sebastian, Viola’s twin brother; the only survivors are the ship captain and Viola.
